WHAT IS AN SMSTS REFRESHER COURSE?

People who currently hold an SMSTS certificate which is close to expiry are required to undertake a SMSTS Refresher course. This is to ensure that all Site Manager training is up-to-date with current legislation.

The SMSTS course lasts for five years once completed, after which the SMSTS refresher course is required. The SMSTS Refresher is a two day course which lasts for a further five years once completed. Anyone holding an SMSTS certificate is required to update their skills and knowledge in line with legislation. Five years is a long time in the construction industry meaning there are lots of legislation changes. It is important that delegates remain up-to-date.

The SMSTS Refresher covers a wide range of topics which may have been affected by changes to procedure since the original course was undertaken.

What will I learn through SMSTS Refresher Course?

The SMSTS Refresher course aims to teach candidates various tasks including:

How to manage health and safety on site in accordance with legal provisions
Understand legal, moral and social obligations to maintain a healthy and safe site
Identify and avoid potential site hazards
Prepare method statements, risk assessments and other requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act

With these objectives in mind, the SMSTS Refresher training covers the following topics:

Legislation updates
Overview of proposed or impending legislation
HSE’s current focus on construction activities
Management of Contractors
Communication and consultation aspects
Behavioural science including human error, stress and prevention

Each of the topics are subject to change so need to be reviewed after five yearsto update delegate knowledge.

How long does the SMSTS Refresher course take?

The SMSTS Refresher only takes two days to complete as it simply updates the delegates health and safety knowledge.

Can I take the SMSTS Refresher?

Only delegates who already hold a current Site Manager Safety Training Scheme certificate and are able to show proof of their completion of the SMSTS course are eligible for the SMSTS refresher. Failure to attend the SMSTS refresher course before expiry of the existing SMSTS certificate will result in the delegate having to re-take the whole SMSTS course.

What will I gain through the SMSTS Refresher?

At the end of the course delegates are required to fill in a multiple choice assessment. If successfully completed students will be awarded a new SMSTS certificate which is valid for a further five years.
